What to do if your aroma stone turns yellow? A guide to identifying and cleaning oil stains and dust
LOX 編輯團隊When your aroma stone turns yellow, first stop adding fragrance and determine whether the yellow staining is from surface dust, tinted fragrance oil, or oil that has seeped into the pores. Surface dust can be gently cleaned with a dry, soft brush and a dry cloth. If oil has already been absorbed by the porous material, it may not be possible to restore its original color; focus instead on isolating it from your desk, keeping it in a cool, ventilated area, and avoiding further applications of oil. Do not soak, scrub vigorously, or use harsh detergents in an attempt to bleach it.

Why do aroma stones turn yellow? Check these 4 common scenarios
Yellow or gray discoloration on the surface of an aroma stone does not necessarily mean the material is damaged. Checking where the color starts, whether it is accompanied by an oily feel, and what liquids were recently used is usually more useful than direct washing.
| Observation | Possible Source | First Steps | What to Avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yellow-brown color at the back or fragrance drip point | Tinted fragrance oil diffusing through the pores | Stop adding oil, place on a tray, and let sit in a ventilated area | Repeatedly adding oil to cover it up |
| Grayish-yellow buildup in grooves and reliefs | Dust sticking to a light film of oil | Gently sweep with a dry, soft brush | Using hard brushes that may wear down details |
| Discoloration on the side touching the desk | Oil seeping downwards or staining from a desk coating | Move to a glass, glazed ceramic, or metal tray | Placing it directly back onto wood or fabric |
| Overall uniform shift to cream/beige | Environmental factors, time, or natural material variations | Compare with old photos and observe if it continues | Bleaching to achieve pure white |
Verify if it's surface dirt or oil trapped within the pores
Using clean gloves or freshly washed and dried hands, examine the front, back, edges, and fragrance application point under natural light. If the color is concentrated in the grooves and fades significantly after a gentle sweep with a dry, soft brush, it is likely surface dust. If the color blooms outward from the drip point and feels slightly oily, it usually indicates that the liquid has entered the pores. The latter should not be scrubbed, as water and cleaning agents will also penetrate the porous material.

6 Steps to Treat Yellow Stains on Aroma Stones
- Stop using: Do not add more oil, and do not try to cover it with other scents.
- Isolate the surface: Move the aroma stone to a non-absorbent tray to prevent oil from contacting wooden desks, fabrics, or painted surfaces.
- Absorb surface oil: If there is still a wet, shiny oil film, gently press with white, unpatterned oil-absorbing paper or a dry cloth—do not rub back and forth.
- Dry-brush the details: Once completely dry, use a soft, dry brush to clear dust from reliefs and grooves.
- Cool ventilation: Place it flat in a location away from direct sunlight, hot air, and heat sources, and let the residual scent fade naturally.
- Re-evaluate: If the surface is dry, the structure is stable, and there is no abnormal odor, you may perform a small test on the back. If it continues to seep oil, becomes soft, cracks, or has an abnormal smell, it is safer to stop using it.
If you have accidentally added too much oil, please refer to Steps for treating an aroma stone with too much essential oil; for desk protection, see What to place under an aroma stone.
Which cleaning methods are not recommended?
- Do not soak or rinse with large amounts of water: Plaster and other porous materials can absorb water, which changes drying times and surface conditions.
- Do not use bleach, solvents, or strong degreasers: They may leave residues, odors, or cause discoloration.
- Do not use hair dryers (hot air), ovens, or direct sunlight to speed up drying: High heat may accelerate evaporation but can also lead to uneven heating and damage to the material.
- Do not use sandpaper on the front relief: Grinding the surface layer will alter the details and appearance, and deep-seated oil stains may still remain.

How to reduce the chance of yellowing in the future?
Every time you switch to a new formula, read the usage labels, then add 1 drop to the back of a clean, dry aroma stone and wait for it to fully absorb before observing the color. Darker, more viscous, or complex fragrance liquids should always be tested first. Keep the tray clean during use, and dry-brush any dust as soon as you see it rather than waiting for an oil film to accumulate. FAQ
Can I wash a yellowed aroma stone back to white?
If it is only surface dust, it may become clean after dry brushing. If tinted oil has entered the pores, it is generally impossible to guarantee a return to the original color. We do not recommend soaking or bleaching to achieve pure white.
Does a yellow oil stain mean the aroma stone is ruined?
Not necessarily. Check if it is still seeping oil, becoming soft, cracking, or emitting an abnormal odor. If the discoloration is only cosmetic but the material is dry and stable, stop adding fragrance and monitor it.
Why does dripping on the back still show through to the front?
Applying fragrance to the back only reduces the risk of direct staining on the front; it does not guarantee it will not discolor. Liquid can still diffuse through the pores, especially if large amounts are used or if the formula is heavily tinted.
Can I use alcohol to wipe the aroma stone?
We do not recommend using alcohol as a general cleaning method. Different materials and fragrance residues react differently, and the liquid may enter the pores. It is easier to control cleaning using a dry brush, dry cloth, and ventilation.
Can I change scents after it turns yellow?
Let the original scent fade naturally, confirm the surface is dry and no longer seeping oil, and perform a single-drop test on the back. If you want to switch to a vastly different scent profile, refer to our guide on changing scents and avoiding scent mixing.
Check usage and color before adding fragrance
To select fragrance oils suitable for space diffusion that can be pre-tested on the back of the stone, check out the LOX Aroma Essential Oil Collection. Different formulas may still carry color, so please perform a small test during first-time use.
